POKOTABI / Sushichō
鮨長 神楽坂 鮨屋
Tucked between Kagurazaka and Edogawabashi, Sushichō serves lunch negitoro don that transforms from wasabi soy to sesame oil sauce, alongside nigiri, chirashi, and evening omakase courses.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Strolling from Kagurazaka toward Edogawabashi brings you to a quiet side street in Nakazatocho, where Sushichō welcomes guests through its noren curtains with unpretentious warmth. At lunchtime, the counter's standout attraction is the negitoro don, served generously in a wooden tub. A swirl of classic wasabi soy sauce first highlights the clean savor of lean tuna and the mellow richness of minced fatty tuna. Halfway through, a splash of sesame oil soy sauce recommended by the master introduces a toasted aroma, transforming the bowl into what feels like an entirely new dish. Accompanied by sea lettuce miso soup, a small salad, and pickles, it makes for a thoroughly satisfying midday meal.
Classic sushi options are just as well represented. The menu ranges from standard to superior and deluxe tiers for both nigiri and chirashi sets, alongside tekka don and maguro sushi for those looking to focus purely on tuna. Shaped with a steady rhythm right before your eyes, the substantial vinegared rice creates that reassuring, balanced unity typical of a dependable neighborhood sushi counter. The roll selection is equally inviting, featuring himokyu, anakyu, and tekka maki, making it easy to add extra pieces depending on your appetite.
Come evening, the counter pairs naturally with beer or sake alongside a sashimi platter tailored for solo diners or pairs. For an unhurried exploration of the day's catch, the special omakase course—weaving together sashimi, grilled dishes, and nigiri—is a dependable choice you can discuss with the chef. Centered around its counter seating, the understated dining room offers a calm setting to appreciate well-handled seafood without pretense, whether on your own or over conversation.
